In 1967 former US Navy WV-2 and WV-3 Constellations were converted for the USAF and sent to Korat, Thailand as a component of “Operation Igloo White”. These aircraft wore the standard three-tone Southeast Asia camouflage paint scheme. But the crew of EC-121R #67-21498 with the 553rd RS, 553rd RW got creative and added shark mouth nose art. The EC-121R was used in the Vietnam War from October 1967 to December 1970.
The Lockheed EC-121 Warning Star was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy airborne early warning radar surveillance aircraft. A military version of the Super Constellation airliner, the EC-121 was designed to serve as an airborne early warning system to supplement the Distant Early Warning Line. The USAF used the EC-121 in Vietnam as electronic sensor monitors and to detect enemy aircraft activity. Introduced in 1954 the EC-121 was retired in 1978 and was replaced by the E-3 Sentry (a modified Boeing 707) which entered service with the USAF starting in 1977.
