Douglas C-47-DL 42-32832 was delivered to the USAAF on February 11, 1943 and assigned to the 53rd Troop Carrier Squadron. On May 4, 1943 42-32832 was one of 13 C-47s ordered to be ferried across the Atlantic Ocean to North Africa. After arriving in North Africa, Lt. Donald King became the pilot of this aircraft for the duration of World War II. C-47 42-32832 made paratroop drops, transported supplies and evacuated wounded troops. This aircraft returned to the U.S. in July 1945.
The C-47 Skytrain or Dakota (RAF designation) was a military transport aircraft developed from the Douglas DC-3 airliner. It was used by the United States and its allies during World War II in a variety of roles including; transporting troops and supplies, casualty evacuation, glider towing and, perhaps most famously, dropping U.S. and Allied paratroopers into combat. The C-47 had several modifications which included; a large cargo door, reinforced floor and upgraded landing gear. In the supply role it could carry 6,000 pounds of equipment, and as a paratroop aircraft it was equipped with benches for 27 fully armed troops. After the war ended thousands of surplus C-47s were converted for use by civilian airlines and private owners. Douglas Aircraft built more than 10,000 C-47s in numerous variants.
