In July of 1941 Robert Tharp Smith (nickname Tadpole) resigned his USAAF commission to fly with the AVG (American Volunteer Group) known as the “Flying Tigers”. The Flying Tigers were divided into three squadrons with Smith’s 3rd Squadron named "Hell's Angels". R.T. Smith’s first victory came on December 23, 1941 flying P-40B #77 (AVG referred to the aircraft as P-40B). In 1942 Smith received P-40B #47 from the 2nd Squadron and by June 1942 had scored 8.7 aerial victories. The AVG is credited with 299 aerial victories and 153 destroyed on the ground.
The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was a single-engine fighter and ground attack aircraft. First flown on October 14, 1938, the P-40 was used by most Allied powers during World War II, and remained in service until the end of the war. The P-40 performed well as an air superiority fighter, at times suffering severe losses but also taking a very heavy toll of enemy aircraft. It was the third most produced American fighter aircraft after the P-51 and P-47. By November 1944 when production of the P-40 ended, 13,738 had been built.
