On August 7th during the invasion of Guadalcanal Donald Runyon shot down two Val dive bombers and on the 8th a Zero and a Betty bomber. On the 24th during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons he shot down three Vals and a Zero. In 1943 Runyon returned to combat as a commissioned officer flying a Hellcat and scored three more victories with VF-18.
The F4F Wildcat was a carrier-based fighter that began service with the U.S. Navy and Britain's Fleet Air Arm in 1940. The F4F would become the primary carrier fighter for the first year and a half of the U.S. Navy's involvement in WWII in the Pacific. The Navy retired the Wildcat in 1945.
