1:48 Scale. Length: 8.25". Wingspan: 10.25"
On April 6, 1945, U.S. ground forces began preparing Kadena airstrip on Okinawa for the arrival of Corsairs from VMF-312 (Day’s Knights later known as the Checkerboards) that were due to arrive three days later. On April 12, 1945 the unit made their initial contact with the enemy. On May 6, 1945, during an attack near Okinawa’s capital Naha, four Corsairs from VMF-312 were lost to enemy anti-aircraft fire. Lt. Merritt Chance and another pilot survived the ditching of their Corsairs while two other pilots weren’t as fortunate.
First flown in May 1940, the F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service during World War II and Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and a large propeller. The Corsair was operated by some nations air forces until the 1960s following the longest production run of a piston-engined fighter in U.S. history. 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models.
