The RCAF 417 Squadron “City of Windsor” was formed in England in November 1941 as part of RAF Fighter Command and flew the Spitfire Vb and Vc between October 1942 and September 1943. In June 1942 the 417 Squadron was transferred to Egypt as part of the Desert Air Force to provide support to the British Eighth Army. In April of 1943 No. 417 Squadron became the only Canadian squadron in the Desert Air Force and provided close support throughout Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. The squadron was disbanded on June 30, 1945.
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British single-seat fighter aircraft flown by the Royal Air Force and many other Allied countries during World War II and into the 1950s. First flown on March 5, 1936 the Spitfire entered operational service with the RAF in 1938. It served in several roles including interceptor, photo-reconnaissance, fighter bomber, carrier-based fighter and trainer. The Spitfire was built in many variants using several wing configurations. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and the only British fighter in continuous production throughout the war. When production ended in February 1948, 20,351 Spitfires of all variants had been built.
