North American P-51K Mustang 44-72035 “Tall In The Saddle” was delivered to the USAAF on December 21, 1944. Originally destined for the 8th AF in England, it was soon re-routed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations with the 15th AF in Italy. 44-72035 was assigned to the 332nd FG / 99th FS known then as the “Red Tails” and later “Tuskegee Airmen”. The squadron provided bomber escorts and ground attack over Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Pilot George Hardy flew many missions in this aircraft and “Tall In The Saddle” survived World War II wearing many bullet hole repairs.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
