On March 24 1945, after eight months and sixty missions, L.t Brown was flying one of 43 P-51 Mustangs escorting bombers to Germany and was credited with downing a German Me-262 jet. In April he was promoted to Captain and also made commander of the 100th FS. By the end of World War II he had been credited with 2 aerial victories, 3 aircraft destroyed on the ground and 13 train locomotives. Capt. Brown was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and other metals and citations.
The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. First flown on October 26, 1940, the P-51 was designed and built in just 117 days. It flew most of its missions as a bomber escort in raids over Germany, helping ensure Allied air superiority from 1944. As well as being economical to produce, the P-51 was a fast and durable aircraft.
