Two months later he was transferred to JG 54 flying a Bf-109. On July 19, 1941 Nowotny scored his first two victories but was then shot down himself. In October 1942 he was appointed Squadron Leader of 1./JG 54. In January 1943 JG54 began to reequip with the much faster and more agile Focke-Wulf Fw-190. Flying more than 442 missions Nowotny accumulated 258 victories of which 255 were over the Eastern Front.
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a German single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Luftwaffe during World War II. The prototype was first flown on June 1, 1939 and production deliveries began in late 1941. The Fw 190 proved to be suitable for a wide variety of roles, including; air superiority fighter, strike fighter and ground attack. From 1941 to 1945, over 20,000 Fw 190s were built.
