In September 2012 No. 1 (F) Squadron reformed at RAF Leuchars and equipped with the new Eurofighter Typhoon. In September 2014 the squadron moved operations to RAF Lossiemouth to join No. 6 Squadron, XV (R) Squadron, “D” Flight, No. 202 Squadron (SAR) and No. 5 Force Protection Wing. No. 1 (F) Squadron has the distinction of being the first to fly VTOL aircraft. In July 2020 the main runway at RAF Lossiemouth was being resurfaced so the Typhoons were moved to Kinloss Barracks and the QRA jets to deploy to Leuchars.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine multi-role fighter built by a European consortium made up of the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy. The development of the Eurofighter began in 1983 with the first flight of the prototype occurring on March 27, 1994. The first fully equipped Tranche 2 Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA7) took to the skies on January 16, 2008.
