Prior to 2019 IX(B) Squadron had been equipped with the Tornado with the task of air defense of the Northern UK. In the same year the unit was disbanded and immediately reorganized as the first RAF Aggressor Squadron flying the Eurofighter Typhoon. Based at Lossiemouth, Scotland the squadron continued to display the Bat on the tail. #ZJ914 was the first aircraft to receive the “Aggressor scheme”. Along with the aggressor role the squadron is also responsible for Quick Reaction Alert.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine multi-role fighter built by a European consortium made up of the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy. The development of the Eurofighter began in 1983 with the first flight of the prototype occurring on March 27, 1994. The first fully equipped Tranche 2 Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA7) took to the skies on January 16, 2008.
