The F-117 was first flown on June 18, 1981 and achieved initial operating capability in 1983. F-117’s took part in the 1991 Gulf War and Operation Allied Force in Yugoslavia, where one was downed by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) on March 27, 1999. It was the only Nighthawk lost in combat. The F-117 was also used during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Of the 64 F-117s built, 59 were production versions.
