The Kosovo War was an armed conflict between Serbia / Montenegro and the Kosovo Albanian rebels known as the Kosovo Liberation Army who were supported by NATO forces. The conflict lasted from February 1998 until June 1999 with the United States sending 36 Lockheed F-117s to fly missions over Serbian targets that conventional aircraft could not reach. F-117 Nighthawk #82-803 “Unexpected Guest” from the 8th FS “Black Sheep” squadron was one of them. It was the 19th F-117 produced in lot 4. It first flew on May 8, 1984 and accepted on June 22, 1984.
The F-117 Nighthawk is a twin-engine attack aircraft built by Lockheed for the U.S Air Force and the first operational military aircraft designed using stealth technology. The F-117 was first flown on June 18, 1981 and achieved initial operating capability in 1983. F-117’s took part in the 1991 Gulf War and Operation Allied Force in Yugoslavia, where one was downed by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) on March 27, 1999. It was the only Nighthawk lost in combat. The F-117 was also used during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Of the 64 F-117s built, 59 were production versions. The U.S. Air Force retired the F-117 in 2008.
