VF-71 “Bedevilers” was originally formed as VBF-20 on April 16 1945 and later became VF-10A then VF-92 and finally VF-74 on January 15, 1950. This was the third squadron to receive this designation. VF-74 received its first F-14A in June 1983. F-14B BuNo. 162919 was delivered as on August 11 1988 making this the first fleet squadron to be equipped with this new aircraft. The Be-Devilers last cruise took place in 1992 and the squadron was disbanded April 30, 1994.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine variable sweep wing aircraft capable of supersonic flight. The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) who share the tasks of navigation, target acquisition, ECM, and weapons use. The Tomcat was only operated by the United States Navy and the Republic of Iran Air Force. The name “Tomcat” is said to come from the call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly, which conformed to the U.S Navy tradition of giving Grumman aircraft feline names.
