In 2010 USN VAW-120 “Greyhawks” received new E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes as well as C-2A Greyhounds to complement their existing models. VAW-120 was an Airborne Command and Control Squadron used as a Fleet Replacement Squadron based at Naval Station Norfolk. One E-2C assigned to VAW-120 was #166503 -661 that departed Norfolk on August 31, 2020 for a training flight when something went horribly wrong and the crew were unable to react or correct the problem. The only action left was for the crew of four to parachute to safety while the aircraft crashed on Wallop Island.
The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is a twin-turboprop airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft operated by the US Navy and the armed forces of several other countries. Developed in the late 1950s as a replacement for E-1 Tracer, the E-2 was first flown on October 21, 1960 and entered operational service in 1964. Variants of the E-2 have been in production since the 1960s, giving it the longest production run of any carrier-based aircraft. The E-2 is operated by a crew of five that includes a Pilot, Copilot, Radar Officer, Combat Information Center Officer and the Aircraft Control Officer.
