Red Flag Alaska 17-1 was the first RF-A for fiscal year 2017 and the last RF-A for 2016 and took place from October 6 thru October 21, 2016. The exercise was originally called “Cope Thunder” but was re-named “Red Flag-Alaska” in 2006. The exercise has 67,000 square miles to perform simulated combat sorties. RF-A allows U.S. and international units such as the RoKAF to work and learn together. Ground and maintenance staff as well as communications and surveillance teams also get to hone their skills.
