Lockheed F-22A Engineering, Manufacture, and Development (EMD) Raptor #91-4002 rolled off the production line at Marietta, Georgia on February 10, 1998 and conducted its first flight from Dobbins ARB (Air Reserve Base) on June 29, 1998. This aircraft was delivered to the USAF on July 25, 1998 and then flown to Edwards AFB, California on August 26, 1998. After it arrived at Edwards, F-22 Raptor 4002 joined 4001 in the F-22 test program. By the end of 1998 these two Raptors had demonstrated that they could attain Mach 1.4 without after-burners.

The U.S. Air Force developed a requirement for a new air superiority fighter to replace the F-15 Eagle. Two proposals were submitted with the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor being selected as the new Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF). The aircraft is constructed using 39% titanium, 24% composite material, 16% aluminum and 1% thermoplastic by weight. All of these components contribute to the F-22 being a lightweight, extremely maneuverable, and extremely fast aircraft that uses stealth technology. The Raptor has additional capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles. The F-22 Raptor was first flown in September 1997 and the first production F-22 was delivered to Nellis AFB, Nevada on January 14, 2003.
