In January 2000 work was completed on the 31st remanufactured AV-8B Harrier II + by using the wings, tail and a few other components from 162731 and joining them with a new fuselage, engine and other parts to create AV-8B Harrier II 165421. In February 2000 the new jet was delivered to VMA-214 “Black Sheep” Squadron, of Pappy Boyington fame, based at MCAS Yuma, Arizona.
The AV-8B Harrier II Plus is the second-generation Vertical and/or Short Take-Off and Landing (V/STOL) ground-attack aircraft operated by the U.S. Marine Corps. It is primarily used for light attack or multi-role tasks, typically operated from smaller carriers and large amphibious assault ships. The British Harrier GR7/GR9 are operated by the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.
