The North American Aviation F-100 Super Sabre was a single-engine jet fighter that served with the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard. First flown on May 25, 1953, the F-100A entered operational service with the USAF in September 1954. It was capable of supersonic speed and made extensive use of titanium throughout the aircraft. During the Vietnam War, the F-100 flew extensively over South Vietnam as the primary close air support aircraft until it was replaced by the subsonic Vought A-7 Corsair II. It was also used by the air forces of several NATO nations and other U.S. allies. The F-100 was retired from service with the USAF in 1970 and by the Air National Guard in 1979..
