A-4E Skyhawk BuNo 151147 was delivered to the U.S. Navy in September 1964 and assigned to VA-43 but soon after was transferred to VA-66. In 1968, 151147 was transferred to VMA-211 "Wake Island Avengers" stationed at Chu Lai Air Base, South Vietnam. Between October 1965 and January 1973, VMA-211 completed four deployments to Vietnam. In 1968 the aircraft was named “Apocalypse III” and flown by 1st Lt. Robert Rivers who later won a Silver Star.
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was a carrier capable light-attack bomber designed for the US Navy and Marine Corp. First flown in June 1954, the A-4s combat career began with carrier-launched raids over North Vietnam in 1964. The Navy began removing A-4's from its front-line squadrons in 1967, with the last one retired in 1975. The Marine Corps retired the Skyhawk in June 1994.
