On August 2, 1948, VA-2A was re-designated VA-15 (Attack Squadron Fifteen). VA-15 Valions spent two tours in Vietnam, first in 1966 and from May 11, 1967 until December 30, 1967, both times aboard CVS 11 USS Intrepid. In December 1966, VA-15 began transitioning to the A-4C Skyhawk, but several A-4Bs also made the second tour. A-4B Skyhawk 145013 was one of the aircraft assigned to the USS Intrepid. On June 1, 1969, VA-15 was disestablished and merged with VA-67. On June 2, 1969 the new combined unit was re-designated VA-15 and adopted the Valions name and insignia.
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was a carrier capable light-attack bomber designed for the US Navy and Marine Corp. First flown in June 1954, the A-4s combat career began with carrier-launched raids over North Vietnam in 1964. The Navy began removing A-4's from its front-line squadrons in 1967, with the last one retired in 1975. The Marine Corps retired the Skyhawk in June, 1994.
