The Krasnodar Higher Aviation Training Facility was formed in 1938. The purpose of the facility was to train Soviet Air Force pilots. From 1970 until 1992 the aircraft used for training was the MiG-21; with the MiG-21SMT in service from the 1970s until the 1980s. These aircraft not only trained Soviet pilots but pilots from Vietnam, Angola, Cuba and many other countries operating Soviet aircraft.
The MiG-21 is a supersonic jet fighter designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the former Soviet Union. Some 50 countries over four continents have flown the MiG-21, and it still serves many nations over a half-century after its maiden flight in 1955. It is the most-produced combat aircraft since the Korean War and it had the longest production run of a combat aircraft (1959 to 1985 over all variants).
