On April 21, 1944, Lt. Cook Cleland, along with his Radioman/Gunner, W. J. Hisler, were flying SBD-5 Dauntless “White 39” of VB-16 assigned to the carrier USS Lexington (CV-16). On this day, near Hollandia, New Guinea, Cleland downed a Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" light bomber. On June 20, 1944, his gunner, Hisler, shot down an A6M Zero and damaged a second aircraft. US Navy VB-16 consisted of 36 Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless's that operated from the USS Lexington from September 1943 to June 1944.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the main dive bomber of the US Navy from mid 1940 to 1944 when it was supplanted, although not entirely replaced, by the SB2C Helldiver. The Dauntless was used in every major Pacific conflict including the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944. A total of 5,936 SBDs were produced.
