The MiG-21PFM was a variant of the popular MiG-21 with 944 MiG-21PFS/PFM variants being produced. The MiG-21PFM (NATO: “Fishbed-F”) entered service in 1966 as a modified variant of the MiG-21PF. Among the upgrades were new radars, IFF transponder, better avionics and a 23 mm cannon that was added due to experience with earlier variants in Vietnam. MiG-21PFMs built after 1968 were capable of carrying Kh-66 beam-riding air-to-surface missiles.
The MiG-21 is a supersonic jet fighter designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the former Soviet Union. Some 50 countries over four continents have flown the MiG-21, and it still serves many nations over a half-century after its maiden flight in 1955. It is the most-produced combat aircraft since the Korean War and it had the longest production run of a combat aircraft (1959 to 1985 over all variants).
