1:400 Scale. Length - Space Shuttle: 3.75". SRBs: 4.5"
Discovery (OV-103), the third of NASAs fleet of reusable spacecraft, arrived at Kennedy Space Center in November 1983. It was launched on its first mission, flight 41-D, on August 30, 1984. It carried aloft three communications satellites for deployment by its astronaut crew. Discovery completed its final flight on March 9, 2011, having flown 39 successful missions, starting from STS-41-D until STS-133, in over 27 years of service.
Discovery is named for two famous British ships of exploration; one sailed by Henry Hudson in 1610-11 to search for a northwest passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and HMS Discovery, one of the ships commanded by James Cook during his third voyage in 1776–1779 during which he became the first European to discover the Hawaiian Islands.
The crawler-transporters are used by NASA to transport spacecraft from the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center to Launch Complex 39 (LC-39), a distance of 3.5 to 4.2 miles. The two crawlers, nicknamed "Hans" and "Franz", were delivered to NASA in 1965 and were originally used to transport the Saturn IB and Saturn V rockets during the Apollo, Skylab and Apollo–Soyuz programs. Between 1981 and 2011 they were used to transport the Space Shuttles. It was the world's largest land vehicle when built, measuring 131 feet long by 114 feet wide with an adjustable height of 20 to 26 feet. It weighs a staggering 2,721 tons and moves on eight sets of tracks, two on each corner. The crawler-transporter can be operated from either of two control cabs, located at each end of the vehicle, and travels the Crawlerway at a maximum speed of 1 mph when loaded or 2 mph unloaded.
The Dragon Wings Space Collection includes high quality, fully assembled, die-cast models of spacecraft and rockets. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail using original specifications. They are constructed with diecast metal and some plastic components.
