Hermann Buchner was a German Luftwaffe fighter pilot during World War II. He is credited with 58 aerial victories and 46 tank victories, including 12 while flying the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter, accumulated in 631 combat missions. After the war, Buchner served as an observer in the weather service of the American occupation forces for two years. In 1955, Austria regained its political autonomy and Buchner joined the emerging Austrian Luftwaffe as a flight instructor and officer. He was one of the first pilots trained on the British De Havilland 115 "Vampire" and later the Swedish Saab J-29.
The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world's first operational jet fighter aircraft. It was produced in World War II for the Luftwaffe and saw action starting in 1944 as a multi-role fighter warplane.
