On August 26, 1940 during the height of the Battle of Britain, a formation of Dornier Do 17s were en route to attack airfields in Essex, England. Having been intercepted by Boulton Paul Defiant fighters, Do 17 5K+AR was shot down over the Goodwin Sands during low tide. The aircraft sat on the sands until it was discovered in remarkable condition almost seventy years later. In May 2013, 5K+AR was lifted out of the sea and the task of post-recovery conservation of the aircraft has begun at Cosford.
The Do17 prototype was built in 1934 in response to a Lufthansa requirement for a 6-passenger commercial mail plane. However, the design was rejected partly due to the slim fuselage, which would later give the aircraft its nickname, the “Flying Pencil”. The military showed interest in the design and it was developed as a medium bomber and long-range reconnaissance aircraft. The Do 17 was used extensively by the Luftwaffe on all fronts during World War II, although by 1942 it started to be withdrawn from mainline duties.
In 1937 Do 17Es were sent to Spain and saw action in the civil war. Combat experience gained during this conflict shaped the further development of the aircraft and in particular the defensive armament was increased and a new nose added. The new variant was the Dornier Do 17Z. This aircraft saw considerable action during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
