Hawker Typhoon “Pulverizer IV” was flown by Canadian pilot Flt. Lt. Harry Hardy. The Typhoon provided close air support to advancing ground units and pounded German strongpoints, armor and troop concentrations with bombs, rockets and cannon fire. These missions were often flown at low level and were particularly hazardous for Typhoon pilots, which were not only vulnerable to attack by Luftwaffe fighter aircraft, but also from ground fire. The dangerous nature of these operations is highlighted by the fact that there were three previous Typhoons flown by Lt. Hardy bearing the name Pulverizer, all three of which were damaged or destroyed while on missions.
The Typhoon was a British single-seat fighter-bomber produced by Hawker Aircraft. Introduced in 1941, as the intended replacement for the Hawker Hurricane as an interceptor, the Typhoon eventually evolved into one of the most successful ground-attack aircraft of World War II.
