In April 1941, No. 205 Squadron RAF received its first Catalina. With the coming war to the Far East the squadron was engaged in trying to locate Japanese naval forces on their way to invade Malaya and the Dutch East Indies. After losing several boats on this task they moved to Java at the end of the year from their base at Seletar. When Japanese forces landed, they retired to the south coast of the island and in March 1942 to Australia, where they disbanded on March 31st.
PBY Catalina was the US Navy's designation for an American and Canadian-built flying boat of the 1930s and 1940s. The PBY could be equipped with torpedoes, bombs, depth charges, and 50 caliber machine guns. It was one of the most widely used aircraft of World War II. Catalinas served with every branch of the U.S. military and in the military forces of many other nations.
