In 1952, while assigned to the USS Bataan during the Korean War, VMA-312 pilot Capt. Jesse Folmar became the first American to shoot down a jet fighter with a propeller-driven aircraft. On September 10,1952, he shot down one of two MiG-15s that attacked him and his wingman, but was himself shot down when attacked by four other MiGs. Capt. Folmar parachuted safely into the water and was rescued shortly thereafter. His F4U-4 Corsair (which he was not flying when he was shot down) was decorated with the silhouette of a diving MiG.
First flown in May 1940, the F4U Corsair was a carrier-capable fighter aircraft that saw service during World War II and Korean War. It paired a lightweight fuselage with a powerful engine and a large propeller. The Corsair was operated by some nations air forces until the 1960s following the longest production run of a piston-engined fighter in U.S. history. 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models.
The Corgi Aviation Archive features a wide selection of high quality, ready-made, diecast model airplanes. Each model is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using specifications of the original aircraft. Corgi models are built with diecast metal and some plastic components.
