The Northrop Grumman X-47B is an unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) developed for carrier based operations. The X-47 project began as part of DARPA's J-UCAS program and is now part of the United States Navy's ‘Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration' program. First flown in February 2011 the X-47 is currently undergoing flight testing, having successfully performed a series of land and carrier demonstrations. Northrop Grumman intends to develop the prototype into an operational aircraft that would enter service by 2019. The X-47B features folding wings for storage on a carrier and two weapons bays that can carry up to 4,500 lb. of ordnance.
